FERGUSON TOWNSHIP, Pa.-- Ferguson Township police said a man stole a cellphone that was left behind by a customer at Giant on North Atherton Street, and now they are asking for the public's help to identify the thief.

It's a careless mistake that anyone can make, leaving your cellphone behind. But for one unlucky woman, her mistake turned into a crime. Police said a man pushing a stroller took the phone at a Giant in State College. According to Ferguson Township police he snatched the cellphone after a customer set it down at a register.

"It's not right. I don't know why he would do it, especially if people are standing right there. I wouldn't have the nerve," shopper Roger Stamm said.

Customers outside of the grocery store said if they saw a misplaced cellphone they'd turn it in and now they are keeping a closer watch on their valuables when they go inside a crowded store.

"It's pretty crazy. I think, I would probably be pretty mad if it happened to me," Chad Whitehead, of State College said.

"I think it's just a sign of the times people are so distracted with so many different things," said shopper Christophe Capuano.

Capuano said he works in retail and said he is trained to be on the lookout for items like keys, cellphones and even wallets that get left behind.

"Sometime I've had customers leave their keys in their bags and I go running after them," Capuano said.

The suspect is described as a male in his mid-20s, about 5 foot 10 inches tall, with tattoos, and was seen getting into a light blue minivan. If you have any information you are asked to contact police.
