Is the reign of silicon coming to an end? Chinese scientists from Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have just unveiled LightGen, a revolutionary photonic AI chip that reportedly outperforms Nvidia’s A100 GPU by over 100 times in speed and efficiency.
While traditional GPUs like the A100 rely on electrons and face massive power and cooling bottlenecks, LightGen uses photons traveling through optical waveguides to perform math at the speed of light. With a staggering 35,700 TOPS (trillion operations per second) and an efficiency of 664 TOPS per watt, this 3D-stacked architecture could rewrite the entire AI hardware roadmap.
