I'm not ready to let go of Halloween! November 1st is Dia de los Muertos - the day of the dead. On this special day, we invite the souls of our departed family and friends to visit us as we celebrate their lives.

My great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from Michoacán, Mexico and became a Naturalized American citizen in 1943. Sadly, he concealed his heritage to escape discrimination and better assimilate into the American culture. He married a woman of German descent, gave all of their children culturally-ambiguous names, and would not allow any Spanish speaking in their home. The only things he held on to from Mexico were his religion and recipes. The bloodlines have diluted with each generation, but today our family is proud to celebrate our roots. Although you wouldn't guess where we're from by looking at us, especially me; I'm thankful for it, and I dedicate this calavera to them.
