Last flight of HN-401 - First Finnish F/A-18 Hornet to retire

Finnish Air Force F/A-18C Hornet HN-401 - retirement day. The plane took off to its final mission, the last flight, before retirement and disassembly. The plane has flown 4499 out of its 4500 flight hours. There's one hour and one flight left. April 2024.

F/A-18 C-Hornet HN-401 is the first Hornet manufactured in Finland. At the same time, the plane is the so-called "fleet leader", i.e. the plane with the most planned flights. Its flight hours were not filled by chance, but planned. The plane has been chosen more often than average for flight missions that are known to put the greatest strain on the structure. The purpose of the use profile, which differs from other machine types, has been to proactively gather information about the effects of use on the structures of the F/A-18 Hornet fighter. In this way, information has been obtained, among other things, about the fatigue of the aircraft frame, and it has been ensured that the planned lifespan of the Hornet fighters can be achieved with measures in accordance with the life cycle plan. The information gained from HN-401's different usage from other aircraft types has been utilized in evaluating the effects and life cycle of the use of the rest of the Hornet squadron.

The Boeing F/A-18 C/D Hornet – the main fighter type of the Finnish Air Force since 1992
The main fighter type of the Finnish Air Force is the American Boeing (formerly McDonnell-Douglas) F-18 Hornet Multirole Fighter. The aircraft was designed in the 1980’s originally for the U.S. Naval Air Force. In 1992 the Hornet was chosen to replace the Swedish Saab 35 Drakens and Soviet MiG 21 bis fighters of the Finnish Air Force. The Hornet won the bidding contest against Swedish, French and American competitors. The Finnish Patria Ltd. has constructed most of the F-18 Hornets used in Finland.
The fleet of the Finnish Air Force consists nowadays of 62 Hornets, 55 single-seat C-variants and seven two-seat D-variants. The aircraft are to be replaced in the 2020’s.

Boeing F/A-18 C/D Hornet – ilmavoimien päähävittäjä vuodesta 1992
McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet on yhdysvaltalaisen McDonnell Douglasin (nykyään Boeing) valmistama kaksimoottorinen jokasään laivastohävittäjä ja rynnäkkökone. F/A-18A ja C ovat yksipaikkaisia malleja, ja F/A-18B ja D kaksipaikkaisia. 1980-luvulla kehitetty hävittäjä suunniteltiin alun perin Yhdysvaltojen laivaston käyttöön. Konetyyppi valittiin ruotsalaisten Saab 35 Draken– ja neuvostoliittolaisten MiG 21 bis -hävittäjälentokoneiden korvaajaksi Suomen ilmavoimilla vuonna 1992 – konetyyppi voitti tarjouskilpailussa ruotsalaiset, ranskalaiset ja yhdysvaltalaiset kilpailijansa. Valtaosa ilmavoimien F-18 -koneista on kokoonpantu Suomessa, Patria Oyj:n tehtaalla.
Suomen ilmavoimille koneita ostettiin alun perin 64 kpl, joista seitsemän oli kaksipaikkaisia koulutuskoneita. Konetyyppi valittiin vuonna 1992 ja ensimmäiset seitsemästä kaksipaikkaisesta F-18D-koneesta lennettiin Yhdysvalloista Suomeen marraskuussa 1995. F-18C-koneet koottiin Kuorevedellä 1996–2000.
