Brian "Kato" Kaelin, the one-time house guest of O-J Simpson, returned to the witness stand Monday to face more questioning from prosecutors.

The trial took a surprising turn when Kaelin, originally a prosecution witness, contradicted earlier statements forcing the prosecutors to treat him as hostile.

Before the day's proceedings got under way, Judge Lance Ito told the prosecution off for unfairly questioning Kaelin on an incident in which OJ allegedly beat his wife Nicole in 1989.

Kaelin didn't know the Simpsons at that time:

"And as we know, Mr Kaelin had no contact with any of these people prior to 1992, and thus had no way of knowing anything personally about those incidents."

The prosecution then attempted to establish Kaelin as an opportunist, in Simpson's debt because the former football star helped him to further his acting career.

At first, Kaelin flatly denied having received help from Simpson.

"And didn't the defendant help you to get parts on a few occasions?
Didn't the defendant call to give you a role in Frogman?"
"No."
"Or bit parts on some of the shows he was working on?"
"Never."
"Never?"
"Never."

But after further questioning, Kaelin admitted Simpson had called a producer in an effort to get him a major part in a feature film, one month before the murders:

"A film."
"A feature film?"
"A feature film."
"Called?"
"Outpost."
"And that's the only time you are aware of that he made an effort to get you a part?"
"Yes."

Kaelin was supposed to be the prosecution's witness. But, frustrated by Kaelin's wavering testimony, the prosecution asked the court to consider him a hostile witness, so that they could cross-examine him more aggressively.

SOUNDBITE:
Your Honour I'm going to ask leave of the court to take this witness as a hostile witness.
SUPERCAPTION Marcia Clark, Prosecutor.

Judge Ito immediately halted proceedings and told the jury to disregard Ms. Clark's comment, but gave no immediate ruling.
Afterwards Kaelin, who's appeared vague and confused throughout his testimony, appeared to admit he'd perjured himself:

SOUNDBITE:
Q. You testified previously during this trial, that he was more upset about Nicole wearing tight dresses than he was about seeing Sydney. Isn't that true?
A. Yes.
Q. And now you are changing that testimony, isn't that what you are doing sir?
A. Er. I .. Yes.
SUPERCAPTION Kato Kaelin.

And he then told Simpson's lawyers that he was being honest throughout the trial:

SOUNDBITE Q. Are you here to tell the truth?
A. Yes.
Q. Are you doing your best to tell the truth?
A. Yes.

SUPERCAPTION Kato Kaelin.

Kaelin was set to finish his testimony, but prosecutors will now have the chance to try to further undermine his credibility.
