Diminutive

When you want to say that something is small without using the word small or “klein” you use the diminutive. In Dutch the diminutive is made by adding to the end of a word one of the following:

-je
-tje
-pje
-kje
-etje

*an important note to make is that all diminutives are “het”

So which of the above do we need to use? Though these rules are not 100% correct, they can work for a majority of the time.

If the word ends in -l, -n, -w, -r, -a, -e, -o, -u
Then the word should be followed by –tje. For example:

De stoel - het stoeltje
Het bier- het biertje
De auto het autootje

Always keep in mind the open/closed syllables

If the word ends in “m” the word should be followed by –pje:

De boom- het Boompje
Het raam- het raampje
De film- het filmpje

For the rest of the words that do not have these endings the word should be followed by –je:

De hand- het handje
De Brief- het briefje

The diminutives ending in –etje are a little more difficult because they go by two things including a double consonant at the end of the word (nn, ll, rr), or by a –ng sound at the end of a word:

De Ster- het sterretje
De bon- het bonnetje

Or by –ng:

De ring- ringetje
De oefening- het oefeningetje

Finally for diminutives ending in –kje go with many words that end in –ing:

Camping- campinkje

Bestelling- bestellinkje

Woning- woninkje

Again these rules are a little difficult to grasp because they are not 100%, but if you have doubts these are always good to turn to.
