A fusion of the structural and spatial arrangements of Mayans and Modernism results in a building that brings to mind ancient Mayan temples in a modern form. The structure incorporates many elements of the Functionalist movement resulting in an open-floor plan while integrating sculptural and pictorial elements, in turn highlighting the university's mission to carry and preserve knowledge, history and culture. The translucent amber squares stacked atop glass windows results in a visual play in the reading
room during the day and an exterior light display on the forecourt at night.

What’s interesting to know is the volcanic stone resulting from the eruption of a volcano five years before construction, was used in the construction as well as resulting spaces in the library.
