Based on the premise that there is a knowledge divide between theory and practice within the urban planning field; this paper outlines the case for reframing the definition of the city towards a more holistic reality. Drawing upon various theoretical frameworks including Integral Theory, Critical Futures Studies, and Cultural Theory, a common ontological relationship arises between the nature of the city and the development of human consciousness. The hypothesis is that the city is as a multi-dimensional habitat (physis, bios, nous and theos) for human and non-human exchange that allows civilisation to realise its potential. The city is conceived as a holon within the cosmos and has a critical role to play in our development as a species. The contribution and implications of this work include an emphasis on the integral, interconnected nature of human habitats, directing local governments and urban policy makers to think and manage Glo-cal sociospatial flows between urban to extraurban contexts across physical, bio-ecological, socio-cultural and metaphysical dimensions. The study broadens the time scale for interventions, casting a long view towards planetary urbanisation and species survival and highlights the epistemological significance of bridging the urban theory-practice divide with integral planning processes.
