In demonstrating the MPO’s support for talent from across Malaysia, Tong’s ten-minute Panaon (Journey) features the sundatang, a traditional, plucked, two-stringed instrument popular among Sabah’s largest ethnic group, the Rungus. The composer writes: “Panaon invites the audience to embark on a profound introspective odyssey – a pilgrimage through the chapters of their lives. The music unfolds like the turning of pages in a cherished tome, unveiling the story of each individual, etched upon the tapestry of existence. As the journey progresses, the ebb and flow of life’s cadences come alive, mirroring the tides of emotions experienced in moments of jubilation and tribulation. Through the melodies, listeners are beckoned to contemplate the tender embrace of laughter and the cathartic release of tears, acknowledging that every twist and turn shapes the intricate fabric of their being.”
