James and Artie Mitchell founded the O’Farrell Theatre in San Francisco during 1969 and ultimately built the operation into a global pornographic empire. Their produced film Behind the Green Door featuring Marilyn Chambers is still considered a porn classic in spite of any attempt at acting. The brothers were close siblings but began to drift apart as Artie’s drug addiction worsened during the late 1980s.

Artie had moved to suburban Corte Madera in Marin County. On the evening of February 27, 1981 James crept up to his brother’s house armed with a .22 caliber rifle. He claimed the visit was an intervention and scare regarding the effects Artie’s drug use was having on the business. Eight shots later, Artie was dead. James would be convicted of voluntary manslaughter but serve only three years. Ten years later he would die of a heart attack. He is buried next to his brother whose life he shortened.
