Gardening Australia has been part of ABC programming since the very start of television in the country – 1957. It started out as a weekly segment in a rural show: In Your Garden with Bill Nicholls, screening on Thursday nights.

This ran until 1967, when a new face appeared on our screens: Kevin Heinze in Sow What. He had to get permission from his employer, Melbourne City Council, to do the show – they agreed, thinking it would only last for a couple of weeks. Twenty-one years later it was still going, filming for much of that time from Kevin’s own garden in outer Melbourne.
