Did you know in her lifetime, a chicken lays around 600 eggs! A hen’s most productive
egg laying cycle is in the first year and as she ages, she produces fewer and larger eggs.
After about two to three years of laying, hens may be considered “senior” and have different nutritional requirements than younger ones. Previous laying cycles use a lot of calcium reserves; therefore, older hens have a higher calcium requirement to produce those larger shelled eggs and can become more vulnerable to injury. Without calcium reserves, they are also more susceptible to bone and joint fractures in their legs, spine, and keel (breast) bones. Just like humans, the older a chicken gets the more fragile they are! Our birds spend most of their life in their senior years and need key nutrients to live a long and healthy life.
