This is an introduction to the 120 film format.

120 is the largest rolled film format that is still in production today. Note that 220 would also fit but they lack a backing paper and thus aren't suitable for cameras with the red filter viewing windows like mine.

Introduced back in 1901, it is also the 2nd oldest film format to be mass produced.

Today, 120 is made by well known companies like Kodak, FUJIFILM, Lomography, CineStill. There are many more manufactures of Black and White ones such as Ilford, Foma, Rolei etc.

120 is the only format still being produced that have no sprockets nor cut outs, i.e. the entire strip is free flowing. This makes it easier to take creative shots as the user isn't restricted to frame sizes.

Loading and unloading 120 film is challenging even with experience. This is largely due to the tendency for the film to unroll itself from the spool in the process. This would result in light damage to the top and bottom of the frames. It is advisable to maintain tension at all times and to securely tape them before sending them off for processing.

The most common frame sizes on a 120 film would allow 10, 12 or 16 frames to fit.
