"It's an incredible discovery. The Catholic University of America in Washington donated the dress back in the seventies, and sometime in the eighties it went missing and was finally found again in July 2021, during the pandemic. It was sent home to a retired professor's home with all the boxes from his office. And there it was, the long-lost dress."

It would be very common for multiples of a dress like this to be made because, you know, she wears it throughout the film. It's the only thing she wears . So we don't know how many were made because MGM didn't keep kind of records that still exist today. But certainly we know of five blue and white gingham dresses that were still in existence, you know, up until the seventies."

"Collectors of material like this really like it to be screen matched to a scene in the film, you know, rather than made for publicity purposes or something like that. And we've managed to match this to a scene in the film where Dorothy's in the Witch's Castle. There's a very distinctive pattern in the gingham on the bodice, which could be matched to that exact scene. So that's really, really thrilling."
