China’s plan to construct the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet has raised serious strategic, ecological, and hydrological concerns for India and Bangladesh.
Located across the Great Bend in Medog County (Pemakoe)—a seismically active and biodiverse region—this mega project aims to generate 60–70 GW of power, nearly three times larger than the Three Gorges Dam.
Experts warn that the project could reduce silt flow to Assam’s floodplains, threaten riverine ecosystems in Arunachal Pradesh, and increase disaster risks in downstream areas.
The absence of a water-sharing treaty between India, China, and Bangladesh further complicates the situation, highlighting the urgent need for transboundary transparency, ecological assessment, and diplomatic engagement.
