The Cleveland Browns kept 4 quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster. It appears that General Manager Andrew Berry thinks he's got some trade value in Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley, so he's willing to listen to offers. Dorian-Thompson Robinson appears to be QB2. The Browns also only kept 2 running backs after cutting D'Onta Forman, so what's the plan in the backfield before Nick Chubb returns?
The Browns officially announced their initial 53-man roster heading into the 2024 season.
The 53-man roster showcases strong continuity on defense and special teams from the 2023 season and a number of pass-catching threats for the offense, along with depth at quarterback.
Defensively, the Browns returned key pieces of their front seven and their secondary. 21 of the 26 total defensive players are returning from last year's roster, which featured one of the top defenses in the league for the 2023 season — leading the league in several categories including total defense, passing defense, third down percentage and first downs allowed.
Offensively, the Browns are rostering four quarterbacks, keeping Tyler Huntley, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jameis Winston as viable options behind starting QB Deshaun Watson. They also boast a deep receiving corps with six wide receivers, including rookie Jamari Thrash who excelled during the preseason, as well as two pass-catching threats in tight ends David Njoku and Jordan Akins.
Special teams kept their consistency from 2023, with the extensions of Dustin Hopkins and re-signing of P Corey Bojorquez in the offseason. Hopkins converted 33 of 36 field goals in 2023, including four game-winning field goals. Bojorquez set the single season Browns record for punt average in 2023 with 49.4 yards, breaking his own record that he had set the year before in 2022.
The Browns can make additional roster moves in the coming days via waiver claims and free agent signings. They'll also look to construct a 16-man practice squad, a group of players that play a vital role throughout the season and serve as an additional layer of depth in the event of injuries on the active roster.
