More than a decade of teaching and lecturing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management, Cogswell Polytechnical College, National Semiconductor University, American Management Association, Stanford University, Emory University, and others has made it clear how excellence in teaching and learning can happen.
First and foremost, attention must paid to the limited attention of human beings which is around 10 to 15 seconds.
Each of these 10 to 15 seconds must find a way of keeping the attention of the listener or student to pay attention for the next 10 to 15 seconds.
This can be accomplished by asking questions and creating an environment where students feel safe to share their learning, attitudes, feelings and experience.
Then an excellent teacher -- acting as a TV game show host, or a professional facilitator -- will have to link what was said to textbook, google.com and youTube.com search to keep the subject interesting while encouraging the students to build on these ideas and be empowered to draw conclusions based on their class, work, or life experience.
Then there is a critically important moment when the student has had an epiphany and has discovered an answer, a solution, or a deep secret about something that he or she did not know before.
This so called "deep learning" helps the students to have the confidence and know-how to independently dig up answers and solutions months and even years later.
In a larger sense, have you noticed that most of youTuble.com and most popular music is around 3 minutes?
My intensive research has convinced me that the teacher who shows a lengthy PowerPoint generally loses student's attention after that 3 or 6 minutes.
