Eliminator Boat Duel didn't get much in the way of advertising, but man, that box art certainly caught your eye at the store. I haven't ever stared at an early 90s Trapper Keeper while psychedelically tripping the light fantastic, but after seeing this game on the shelf at Hollywood Video, I'm confident that I have a solid frame of reference.

And if you somehow weren't sold on the speedboat vaporwave vibes alone, the description on the back of the box was sure to seal the deal: "Ummm, get ready, get psyched, get turboed for the sea a'thrill of your aquatic life as you delve into the racing scene. Your dream - to dethrone the emperor of foul play, the king of sore losers, the legendary Power Boating League World Champion - Disaster Don. He's as cunning as he is rotten and if you don't believe he'll rock your world to stop you from pulling a coup you're about a quart low. This race ain't over 'til the fat lady sings and Don's hearing soprano."

How could any self-respecting gamer refuse a sales pitch like that?

Eliminator Boat Duel is a hyper-stylish 1-v-1 boat racing game that makes a good effort to stand out. There are twenty-five races split across three environment types (wharf, bayou, and ocean), and each race is divided into legs that transition between top-down and behind-the-boat perspectives on the fly. The action keeps a good pace; the controls are tight; and the ability to spend your winnings on repairs, nitro restocks, and custom performance upgrades gives the arcade-style gameplay a small but welcome bit of depth. The game also looks sharp and runs well, the music is catchy, and the cutscenes are gloriously tacky.

Eliminator Boat Duel is a novel and fun 8-bit racer slathered in 90s 'tude. If you liked Super Off-Road or Wave Race and can tolerate rubberbanding AI opponents, this one is worth checking out!
