Centuries before Christianity rose to power, mysterious women known as Sibyls spoke prophecies in the voice of the gods. But long after their deaths, Christian writers rewrote those pagan oracles—slipping Jesus, the cross, and even the virgin birth into their mouths. These altered texts, now called the Sibylline Oracles, were used by early Church leaders to claim that even the ancient world had predicted Christ.
