Caste and untouchability owe their origins to brahmanical Hinduism, but aren’t restricted to the Hindu community. Caste oppression also exists in Christian and Muslim communities. But are the people at the intersection of caste and minority religion given their due rights?

In this two-part episode on What's Your Ism, Sudipto Mondal speaks to Ambedkarite author Shalin Maria Lawrence and sociologist-professor Khalid Aniz Ansari about the complexities of anti-caste politics.
In part one, Lawrence talks about Christians under British rule, reservation, Brahminism, and laws to protect the rights of Dalit Christian.

She says, “India is about whether you are Brahmin or not. And Tamil Nadu is about whether you are Dalit or non-Dalit. Religion is not a problem here. We did not convert to Christianity because we wanted to get away from caste, but because we wanted to get away from a system that called us untouchable.”
