Описание к видео Louisiana resident pays tribute to Ellis Marsalis

(3 Apr 2020) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus133621

A woman wearing a mask over her nose and mouth played "Do You Know What It Means, To Miss New Orleans" and other classic New Orleans tunes from the calliope atop the Natchez paddlewheel riverboat docked on the Mississippi River.
The calliope is traditionally played to call people to the river for a boat cruise, but on Friday, it was a way to pay tribute to Ellis Marsalis Jr., the jazz pianist, teacher and patriarch of the New Orleans musical clan who died late Wednesday from pneumonia brought on by the new coronavirus.
Marsalis leaves six sons and a deep legacy.
He was 85.
The pandemic has forced many to find ways to express their grief from a distance when loved ones are lost.
As word of Marsalis' death spread, a black-ribbon wreath with his picture was hung on the door of Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro, the club where Marsalis performed regularly for years.
On Friday, a woman took to the calliope as onlookers stood by, some wearing masks, taking pictures and shooting video.
Because Marsalis opted to stay in New Orleans for most of his career, his reputation was limited until his sons became famous.
Four of his six sons are musicians: Wynton, a Pulitzer- and Grammy-winning trumpeter, is America's most prominent jazz spokesman as artistic director of jazz at New York's Lincoln Center.
Branford, a saxophonist, has won three Grammys, led The Tonight Show band and toured with Sting.
Delfeayo, a trombonist, is a prominent recording producer and performer.
And Jason, a percussionist, has made a name for himself with his own band and as an accompanist.
Ellis III, who decided music wasn't his gig, is a photographer-poet in Baltimore.
Their brother Mboya has autism. Marsalis' wife, Dolores, died in 2017.
