This video is about Red Sonja, with a focus on her origin.

To give you an idea of what she looks like and the sort of adventures that she gets involved in, a chronological series of Marvel Comic Book Covers featuring her, from 1976 to 1978, with Frank Thorne art, are presented.

Red Sonja is a sword and sorcery female superhero (superheroine) created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973.

She first appeared in Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian No. 23, cover-dated February 1973, but she did not appear on the cover.

She is partially based on Robert E. Howard’s character Red Sonya of Rogatino, a female swashbuckler from his 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture”.

Robert E. Howard lived from 1906 to 1936, and wrote many types of stories for pulp magazines, and is well known for his character Conan the Barbarian.

He is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre.

Roy Thomas created a new origin story and changed Robert E. Howard’s 16th century setting to the much older Hyborian Age of Conan the Barbarian.

The Hyborian Age is a fictional time period, set after the destruction of Atlantis and before the rise of any known civilization.

Red Sonja’s signature clothing is her scale mail bikini armor.

When she is 21 (could be 17) her family is killed by mercenaries.

Then goddess Scathach appears to her and gives her incredible skill in handling swords and other weapons, on the condition that she not allow herself to be loved by a man unless he defeated her in fair combat.

In 1985 there was a Red Sonja movie, and she was played by Brigitte Nielsen.

A new movie about Red Sonja is in work with actress Matilda Lutz to star as Red Sonja.
