Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.

Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to be Better Ancestors?”
 
This week, Better Ancestors visits Project Jonah, a New Zealand charity that empowers locals to help at whale standings, and to provide all of the aid possible to these animals in their time of need.
 
New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of whale standings, which routinely results in the beaching of hundreds of whales at a time. During these mass strandings, it is the highly skilled volunteer medics, trained by Project Jonah, who can offer the best care possible. By directing the public on how to help and maintain personal safety, these volunteers are able to keep stranded whales from over heating and eventually return them to the water if possible.
 
Although rescue efforts are essential in the safety of these majestic creatures, the root cause of these events in many cases are man-caused. Through the disruption of migratory routes by shipping, and habitat threat through over fishing, whales face severe obstacles and threats in the modern industrial ocean. If we truly wish to help the whales, who are an integral part of countless ecosystems, we need to seek preventative solutions.
