Fall comes to Moab’s La Sal Mountains about a month before it arrives in the red rock desert. By mid September the heat is still on the red rock desert but the aspen trees are showing all of their golden glory. There are few things more beautiful than the quaking of a golden aspen leaf and there is no better place to see aspens in Moab than from the mountain trails. Why spend another 100 degree day in the valley when you could take a UTV trip to La Sal Pass.

Many of the roads in the La Sal's are well cared for gravel roads, but there is still one trail that will get your blood pumping, the road to La Sal Pass on the the Moab side of the mountains. Within 15 minutes on the trail, we forget all about Moab's heat we thought we were in the Colorado Rockies. We had to navigating our Can-am Maverick around the many rocksin the trail up the mountain. At one point the trail changes completely to a bolder field. The barren desert will slowly change to a lush forest of aspen and fir trees.

If you just want to explore, side by siding in the La Sal mountains is a great way to do it. There and many side trails in the Manti La Sal National Forest that you could make into a great day trip. Many trails dead-end but a few connect back to Geyser Pass and points lower on the mountain, another goes to an abandoned mine, still others make their way towards the Cameo Cliffs area.

Hiking also abounds in the Manti La Sals. La Sal hikes such as the hike to Mt Peale or Mt Tuk are popular and the vistas from the top of the red desert below is breathtaking both figuratively and physically. If you have the energy, the Mt Tukuhnikivatz hike is 5 star and will take you well above the tree line. If you are so inclined you could follow that hike up with a side by side ride to Tuk Arch to get a different perspective all together.

Maybe you long to camp in the cooler weather and spend a night where no artificial light can be seen. There are many small ponds on the mountain that would make a great place to pitch a tent. If an hard sided camper is more your thing, La Sal Passes eastern approach can be accessed with a trailer or camping van.
