Visiting this synagogue was very moving for me, as my dad went there as a boy, while this was my first visit to India.

The magnificent three-storey synagogue - now an Indian Heritage site - is an unusual combination of architectural styles, and includes massive, beautifully carved, stone capitals and Minton floor tiles imported from England.

Just before our tour group left the building - as I lingered behind for a few last moments, reluctant to depart - I hummed a note and discovered the amazing acoustics. Then I burst into this version of "Yimloch" (God will reign for ever) from the liturgical repertoire of the Sephardim of London - the community in which I grew up, and whose music I love best.
