Join me as I check out one of my all-time favorite abandoned locations: Naval Air Station South Weymouth, a former United States Navy airfield shared between the Massachusetts towns of Weymouth, Abington, and Rockland. This airfield is famous for supporting anti-submarine blimp operations throughout America's involvement in World War II: between 1942 and 1945, the Naval Air Station South Weymouth saw K-class blimps patrol the waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean for German U-boats and submarines. Considering the massive size of blimps, the airfield had several gigantic landing strips and two especially large hangars that could store several blimps, as well as various other aircraft, inside at a time. By the early 1950s during the post-war era, the station became part of the Naval Air Reserve Training Command and operated numerous reserve aircraft and units. The site was eventually closed down in 1997, with much of the property being demolished and redeveloped. Unfortunately, very few structures from the original operation remains, other than the massive airstrips and the two iconic control towers.

The Naval Air Station South Weymouth is one of my favorite abandoned locations not just in Massachusetts, but in New England as a whole! The site is very unique, especially the two control towers that are easily accessible for pedestrians. One of these towers (the red-and-white striped one) was built in 1951 and used extensively, while the other tower (the taller white one) was built in the mid-1990s, but immediately abandoned and never used. When I first explored this location, both towers were accessible; you could climb up to the top of them from the inside and get stellar views of the airfield from the upper deck. Unfortunately, as of June 2023, both towers have been completely sealed shut and appear to be inaccessible. Nonetheless, they are iconic abandoned locations within the urbex scene, and two fascinating pieces of U.S. military history! The airfield itself is magnificent--it is a truly massive location due to the multiple blimps that once landed and departed from it during World War II.
