As we begin the rational functions chapter (where x is in the denominator of the function), we start with the most basic form in inverse variation. Inverse variation appears in the form y = a/x, where a is a constant of variation, therefore a = xy, or the product of the variables is constant. Direct variation (apparently learned back in Big Ideas Math: Grade 7) is of the form y = ax, where a = y/x is the constant of variation. Both will be compared in this section.

Inverse variation takes hold ultimately, though. Once we begin forming equations, they are all with regard to inverse variation. This includes basic equations, word problems, and even the error analysis questions.

One could argue that while this section belongs specifically in this chapter, this chapter is not fitting for this section. The remainder of the chapter (6.2 on graphing, and 6.3 - 6.5 which involves simplifying/solving rationals algebraically) are the more prominent sections when one thinks of rational functions.
