Everything you need to know before visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. This park definitely exceeded our expectations and would highly recommend visiting if you plan to visit Colorado. You will want to visit this park as early as you can to beat the crowds and the heat. The sand can get very hot during the day so it's best to visit when it's cooler either in the morning or once the sun goes down especially if you are bringing your dog with you. Yes, you heard that right, this park is dog-friendly, which has to be one of our favorite things because being able to take Chloe with us just makes it all better.

We recommend coming in super early in the morning so you have time to hike up and catch the sunrise on top of the Dunes. This may sound cliche but we promise it is so worth the views and it's one of the most peaceful moments we can remember. You honestly forget that you are in Colorado and feel like you are somewhere completely different.

This park is also an international dark sky park which means there is almost no light pollution so you can get an amazing view of the stars and the Milky Way! Definitely bring a flashlight so you can make your way around and even better if you have a red light because this won't disrupt your eye's adjustment to light so you can see the stars and the Milky Way at its clearest, plus is less harsh for others taking in their views as well.

Something else you can do in this park is get a camping pass to tent camp overnight in the dunes, we did not personally do this but definitely could be a great experience if you were interested.

Remember to always leave no trace to keep our parks clean, and if you are bringing your dog make sure to clean up after them and to keep them on a 6-foot leash so all dogs continue to enjoy the park with their owners.
