Ray dalio has recently come out and said we are already in a depression and that the next 10 years will be a “lost decade” for the stock market. Here are the reasons he states that point to another stock market crash in the near future:

First, the shrinking of profit margins. As trends move away from globalization and more companies want to start production in the country they operate in, this means profit margins will shrink as cost of production increases. We’ve already seen companies like Intel announce they will be moving production to the US, where wages and cost of goods are much higher than overseas in countries like China.

In addition to the profit margins, the corporate tax rate is at the lowest point since 1940 and this will change eventually. Presidential candidate Joe Biden has come out and said he would raise the corporate tax rate to at least 28%, which would again lead to lower profit margins for companies.

The second factor is a massive debt reset coming. The corporate debt has increased exponentially over the past 20 years, coinciding with the fall in the federal funds rate from 20% all the way down to 0. As rates fall, companies can take on more and more debt without worrying about interest payments, so it makes sense that most of this corporate debt has come in the past 20 years.

But we are now at what Ray Dalio calls the end of the long term debt cycle. Unlike the short term cycle, which is responsible for stock market crashes, the long term debt cycle ends every 75-100 years when INTEREST RATES CAN’T GO ANY LOWER AND COMPANIES ARE DROWNING IN DEBT. This is exactly what we’ve seen happen over the past 50 years. Interest rates going lower and lower, until now they’re at 0 and when another recession happens there is nothing else the federal reserve can do.

The result of this will be a currency crises and reset in the currency system. At the end of the last long term debt cycle (1945) we had the Bretton Woods agreement, which took the dollar off the gold standard and created a massive shift in the global currency system. There is potential for another massive event like this to happen in the next decade, which will absolutely have an impact on the stock market.

So what does this mean for you? Obviously I can’t give financial advice, but what I’m doing is simply focusing on only buying individual high quality companies with strong management teams, growing earnings, and low debt levels when they are trading at a discount to their intrinsic value. Warren Buffett uses this strategy and outperformed the market from 2000-2012 where the stock market was going sideways. Even when stocks do nothing, individual companies will eventually increase in value when purchased at the right price.
