Cleopatra, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, was not actually Egyptian. Cleopatra VII was of Macedonian Greek descent and belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, which was established by one of Alexander the Great's generals, Ptolemy I Soter, after Alexander's death. Despite ruling Egypt and being one of its most famous figures, Cleopatra's heritage was Greek, and she was the first in her family to learn the Egyptian language!
