Welcome to the eightieth in a series of poems and reflections on the themes of creativity, environment and mental health, drawing on my experience of bipolar.

Another from my bike cycling local country lanes, as far away from the abattoir as I could be. I worked in abattoirs for three months as part of my training to become an Environmental Health Officer. Frightening how you become used to the place and even feel hungry.

But the poem is prompted now by having tried a McPlant! Amazing that McDonalds are now selling vegan burgers! Made with pea protein. It tasted just like a normal burger but without the guilt of destroying rainforests in Brazil, one of the many factors accelerating climate change. We should always know where our food comes from…


Chilling Rooms

There’s a cold place
where headless victims hang

and steam, breathing
into raw air

preparing themselves
to be eaten.

Some call this purgatory,

half-way between hell
and the freezer bag.
