Asthma can be a life threatening disease if not managed well. Identifying and addressing asthma triggers can help reduce trips to the emergency room and hospitalization rates. In this training, participants will learn about environmental triggers, ways to reduce exposure, and safe practices when using cleaning products. Community resources to help with managing environmental triggers will also be discussed.

About the presenters:
Anne Kelsey Lamb, MPH, is the director of Regional Asthma Management and Prevention (RAMP) and the co-director of the Climate Change and Public Health Project in PHI’s Center for Climate Change and Public Health. Serving as RAMP director since 2002, Lamb provides strategic guidance in working toward the organization’s vision and mission, ensuring a highly effective organization and innovative, successful programs. With a strong interest in both chronic illness and social inequities, she leads all components of the organization’s efforts to reduce the burden of asthma in the San Francisco Bay Area, including: technical assistance to community-based asthma coalitions; the provision of a clearinghouse of information on asthma; convening groups to facilitate networks and capacity building; and creating change through policy advocacy. Previously, she was a health educator at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif. Other previous professional affiliations include: the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Genetics Program and the Prevention Center of Boston. Lamb received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan.

Vickie Leonard, RN, FNP (retired), PhD was the Program Coordinator for the Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (WSPEHSU) for five years and now heads up the WSPEHSU’s Improving Environmental Health in Early Care and Education Program. She currently writes a newsletter for Promotores de Salud and Community Health Workers on children’s environmental health. She also recently completed a second addition of the Green Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting Toolkit for Early Care and Education. Prior to coming to the WSPEHSU, Vickie worked at the California Childcare Health Program, she provided technical assistance to child care providers and parents on health and safety in child care, writing newsletter articles and other educational materials on health and safety, and training nurses as child care health consultants. While at CCHP she received funding for an IPM Toolkit for Early Care and Education to encourage ECE programs to use fewer pesticides.
