Bob Weir, co-founding guitarist and singer of the Grateful Dead, has died at 78 due to underlying lung issues. He had courageously battled cancer after being diagnosed last July, performing three farewell shows with Dead & Company before his passing. Born Robert Hall Weir in San Francisco and raised by adoptive parents, he began playing guitar as a child and met Jerry Garcia at 16, forming a folk duo that evolved into the Grateful Dead. The band gained fame in the 1960s for their psychedelic improvisations and became central to the Bay Area counterculture. Weir shared lead vocals with Garcia and developed a unique rhythm guitar style blending country, jazz, and blues. He co-wrote songs like "Sugar Magnolia," "Playing In The Band," and "One More Saturday Night," and led on the classic "Truckin’." His solo album Ace and side projects Kingfish and Bobby And The Midnites highlighted his musical versatility, though the Grateful Dead remained his primary focus. After Garcia’s death in 1995, Weir led RatDog and participated in offshoots including Dead & Company, performing landmark residencies in Las Vegas. He also toured with Wolf Bros and was featured in the 2014 documentary The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip Of Bob Weir. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and honored at the Kennedy Center in 2024, Weir’s artistry shaped American music, building a community and legacy that continues to inspire generations of fans.
