King Athamas of Boeotia was married to Nephele, a divine being. They had two children, Phrixus and Helle, from this marriage. However, Athamas left Nephele and married Ino, the daughter of the king of Thebes. Over time, Ino became intolerant of her stepchildren and devised a scheme against them. She scattered a harmful substance over the fields of Boeotia, which caused the crops to fail. The king asked the chief priests to explain the cause. Meanwhile, Queen Ino bribed the priests to deliver a false message to the king, claiming that the children must be sacrificed to appease the gods. At first, the king hesitated. However, under pressure, he decided to take his children to a nearby mountain to sacrifice them. Just as he was about to do so, Zeus intervened and sent the Golden Fleece Ram to save the children. The ram flew through the air, carrying them towards Asia. Unfortunately, as they were flying over what is now the Dardanelles, Helle lost her balance and fell from the ram. To honor the Golden Fleece Ram, Zeus placed it among the stars as the Aries constellation.
