Shaping with Light: Cinematography Techniques

One of the main three characteristics is light direction. This refers to where the light is coming from in a scene. Depending on how the light is hitting a subject, it can make a big difference in how that subject looks. This can be used for storytelling purposes, or to find the best lighting for your subject. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re lighting a subject from every direction to look at how light placement can shape the look of a face.

In this video, Matt from the A-Team at different light placements and how they affect the subject. First, he picks one light source that will stay consistent throughout the setups. This way the light color and quality remain the same. Next, he tests out different heights of the light to see how that changes the look of the face. Lastly, he places the light in different positions around the subject to see how each position changes the way the face looks.

The main aspects addressed in this video are look, and light placement. Look refers to the look you want for the project you’re working on. Knowing that ahead of time will help inform lighting your decisions. Light placement refers to where the light is set in a scene. There are specific light placements that work as good starting points you can adjust from.

When lighting your subjects, keep in mind that different faces react to light differently. A setup that works for one person might not work well for another person. However, there are certain light placements that will work well for anyone, they just might need small adjustments. Make sure the lighting is being driven by the story and what you want the audience the think when they’re looking at how the character is lit.
