What is Thermal Stress?

Thermal stress occurs when different areas of a glass pane heat and cool at different rates. As the glass expands or contracts unevenly, internal tension builds. If that stress becomes too great, it can lead to cracks or breakage, particularly in the centre pane of a triple-glazed unit, where temperature differences are most pronounced.

To prevent thermal breakage and ensure long-term performance, the choice of centre pane glass is critical.

There are two primary approaches:

1. Toughened Soda Lime Glass
Toughening introduces surface compression, increasing glass resistance to sudden temperature changes and mechanical stress. This is a proven solution widely used in traditional TGUs.

2. Corning® Enlighten™ Glass, a Boro-Aluminosilicate Glass. In our ultra-thin Glass TGU range, Regency Glass uses Corning® Enlighten™ Glass as the centre pane. This glass has a 3x lower coefficient of thermal expansion compared to soda lime glass, meaning it naturally resists thermal stress without the need for toughening. This makes it lighter, more durable, and more stable in performance-critical applications.
