How to Install and Use Different Desktop Environments in Ubuntu Linux

In this video, I guide you through installing and using multiple desktop environments on Ubuntu Linux. Whether you want to try KDE Plasma, Mate, Cinnamon, or XFCE, I’ll show you how to set them up, switch between them, and remove them if needed.

📝 Step 1: Considerations Before Installing
Create Separate User Accounts: Each desktop environment stores user-specific settings and themes, so it’s recommended to have a unique account for each.
Default Applications: Each desktop environment comes with its own set of default apps, such as different terminal emulators.
Appearance Compatibility: Applications built for one environment (e.g., Kdenlive in KDE Plasma) may not look the same in another (e.g., Gnome).

🔄 Step 2: Update Your System
Before installing any new desktop environments, make sure your system is up to date:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
After updating, reboot your system.

💻 Step 3: Installing Desktop Environments
1. KDE Plasma:
sudo apt install kde-standard

2. Mate:
sudo apt install mate-desktop-environment mate-desktop-environment-extras ubuntu-mate-themes

3. Cinnamon:
sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment

4. XFCE:
sudo apt install xfce4 xfce4-goodies

When prompted, choose the Gnome Display Manager. After installation, reboot your system.

🔑 Step 4: Logging into a New Desktop Environment
1. At the login screen, click the gear icon.
2. Select the desktop environment you wish to use (e.g., KDE Plasma).
3. Log in as usual.

If you decide to remove a desktop environment later, use the following commands to uninstall KDE Plasma (as an example):
