Freedom: The Underground Railroad is a co-operative board game set in early American History. In it, players work together for the Abolitionist Movement to help bring an end to slavery in the United States. Players collectively help Slaves move along the Underground Railroad and evade capture by roving Slave Catchers. Players engage in tragedy and triumph by raising funds and implementing real historical figures to progress the Abolition Movement and the freedom of Black Americans. Each core mechanic blends seamlessly into the history of the time period, modeling the desperate struggle each Slave faced in the fight for Freedom. By allowing players to open a dialogue about the tragedy of the institution of slavery in the United States, it helps us better understand our past and our future.
Freedom is a game that leaves players with a true sense of accomplishment when they succeed in recreating history and Abolishing Slavery, and a sobering sense of loss when they do not. It helps players to connect to a part of history that remains important today by allowing them connect to the events, locations, and historical figures that helped drive the Abolitionist movement.
