Baryonyx: The First Fish-Eating Dinosaur Ever Discovered | Documentary

Today, we will be exploring a dinosaur - along with its wider family - who has been the victim of one of these proverbial tugs of war - Baryonyx, a famous genus of spinosaurid from what is now England. To this day, from its initial discovery in 1986, it remains one of the most iconic and well-known dinosaurs from the British Isles, but its past has been steeped in mystery and controversy. Spinosaurids contain some of the largest and most well-recognised dinosaurs ever to live and were prominent across the Cretaceous Period.

Famous for their strange crocodilian appearances, affiliation with an aquatic lifestyle and often immense sizes, these amazing theropods are no strangers to scientific controversy. The debate falls more specifically on what some of these dinosaurs looked like in life and how they lived and fed. Given their crocodilian appearances, they are known to have lived a life around water where they hunted fish, but how exactly? Did they stalk by the water's edge like a heron or glide through the water like a crocodile to catch their meal? Were they efficient swimmers, or did they prefer a life on the water's edge? They are, without a doubt, some of the strangest vertebrate animals ever to evolve, with much left to teach us. Without further ado, let's dive into the world of Baryonyx, one hundred and thirty million years ago in what is today known as Southern England.
