We were on the same train to Belgrade.
To reach Switzerland, Hungary and Austria the only possible road is Serbia.
So we said that a bad experience should not have discouraged us from visiting one of the most talked-about countries in the Balkans.
The Skopje-Belgrade night train travels daily starting at 10:30 pm and arriving at 8:30 am the following day.
We knew that hundreds of migrants walk the same road with the help of darkness. What we didn't know is that to do this they use this train.
After crossing the Macedonian-Serbian border, at 2 am, they board the train at the first useful stop and travel to Belgrade.
The Macedonian and Serbian controllers do not stop anyone. Indeed, to our pleasant surprise, they find a place to face the long crossing.

Since the beginning of this journey in the Balkans we have always been considered refugees. And even tonight, unintentionally, we shared the journey with hundreds of migrants as migrants.

They look out the window. They crossed Asia on foot to get here in Serbia. One year on foot.
A very thin thread separates us. We have a passport and card that allows us to go almost anywhere we want. They travel as refugees.
They're happy. It seems no longer the time spent between one border and another. Certainly they will have walked for a long time in the mountains waiting to enter Serbia escaping the police.
They will come to Belgrade with us and maybe they will wait a long time before getting back on the road. The higher you go, the more the controls become bad. Or maybe they'll leave tonight with the help of the dark.
The bush is thick in the small Serbian villages. Perhaps it will be easier to enter Hungary.
Many families. Many children. Too many dreams crammed into 3 cars.
With the heads emerging from the window, they enjoy today's victory and the early morning sun.
They call it "the train of hope", and today we know why. May God protect and bless you.
