CBEC consist of 3 inspector posts, who gets promoted to the IRS.

Central Excise Inspector
Preventive Officers
Examiner
Central Excise Inspector and Preventive Officers gets promoted to Superintendent.
Examiner gets promoted to Appraiser.
Promotion ratio to IRS for all three cadres is 13:2:1. That means out of 16 IRS (through promotion) 13 will be from Central Excise Inspector, 2 from Preventive Officers and 1 from Examiner. so right now an Examiner takes almost 15 yrs to get promoted to IRS, If you are in toppers that too in Chennai. so if you are in some other place and not in toppers than add 4–5 yrs more.
Job at work
It is of two types
Desk job - Fix 9 to 5 jobSimply to make report & assess itits just like some clerical paper work
Field job -No fix working hourssome times, you’ve to work over nights as welljust to assess payment of Custom Duties on timeA Preventive Officers has to check boats, ships that’re coming from foreign countries loaded with goods. Also contain the power to arrest people & check whether the goods are illegal or notThere’re shifts in work but if you’re on raid you can work for multiple shifts.

Newly Appoint candidates gets positing mainly in 6- Zones Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Cochin, Chennai & Viskhapatnam.

Salary in hand:
Basic Pay is 44900 after 7 pay commission
In Hand is around 54k for Class A city
around 49k for Class ‘B’ city

Additional Benefits:
Medical, HRA, TA, DA
Allowance for Telephone, transport & Fuel

Quarters:
It takes normally 3–4 years to get your own quarter
As too much official formality & long waiting list

Promotion:
It is hierarchy one thing led to another

Preventive Officer(Inspector) – initially
Superintendent Of Customs – 8–10 years(Gazetted post)
Assistant Commissioner – 15–16 years(equal to IRS )
Deputy Commissioner – at very last stage
