2018 Sep 08 Day#8 -- Today was the Regattas Flag La Concha (Bandera de La Concha), one of the oldest and most famous rowing regattas in San Sebastain which occurs on the first 2 Sundays of September every year. People started to flock in La Concha Bay as early as 9am. The competition started at 12pm from where each team, from towns/villages around the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula with 13 rowers and a helmsman, speeds into the open sea outmanuevering each other, and then sails back to the finish line. There was so much energy and excitement to see throughout the day with cheering fans dressed in their traditional colors supporting their teams. Several food stalls were up selling grilled sardines, traditional flatbreads with txistorra (cured sausage) and cider to instill the holiday mood. The regatta is actually part of a week-long Basque festival, 1st Sunday to 2nd Sunday of September, celebrated with Basque traditional cuisine, local beer and of course music and dances. To get a good view of the regatta, go to a donostia kultura site; a ticket may be required. We left San Sebastian to Biarritz, a French border along Basque coast, passing by Saint-Jean-de-Luz for a few hours. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is small but beautiful/charming inland village where the Way of St. James pilgrimage route cross through this region. Its historic center or old town is quite busy with a maze of shopping streets. Walking is the only way to get around and admire this beautiful town. Stroll the pedestrian old streets like rue Léon Gambetta to the promenade along Grande Plage (beach). Visit the 13th-century old Church of St. John the Baptist and admire the ambitious altar made of carved wood and covered with gold. See the best views of the church from Rue Gambetta. Sit and/or dine in the lovely Place Louis XIV (plaza) and watch the day passes by. Climb to the top of La Colline Sainte-Barbe and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the town and beach below. 'though our time here was short but it was surely filled with so much memorable memories -:)
