Flugplatz Alt Daber (Wittstock Dosse)

Описание к видео Flugplatz Alt Daber (Wittstock Dosse)

Originally built in 1934 as a glider airbase, the Fliegerhorst Wittstock was converted and expanded in 1938 to serve exclusively as a "Fallschrimjäger" or Paratrooper training facility for the Nazi Luftwaffe. After the german capitulation, the Soviet Red Army took over Alt Daber, eventually adding a tarmac runway in the early 1950s.

After German reunification and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the red Army withdrew from Wittstock on the 20th of June, 1994. After a lengthy legal battle, the German government gave up on its plans to reactivate the Airbase, leaving it virtually abandoned. In 2014, chemical contamination was found in the soil and asbestos in the buildings - leading to the wide scale demolition of the Flugplatz Alt Daber.

As of 2023, the former fire station, the two hangars and the main administration building have been preserved as "listed" buildings while all but 2 of the former soviet apartment blocks have been torn down (along with the other buildings). The majority of the former airfield have been turned into a solar farm.
