Michael M. Coroza, Ph.D., is Professor and current Chair of the Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, where he handles graduate and undergraduate courses in Filipino Literature, Creative Writing (Poetry), and Literary Translation. A multi-awarded poet, essayist, literary translator, and editor, he received the Southeast Asia Write (S.E.A.Write) Award from the Royalty of Thailand in 2007 and the Ani ng Dangal (Harvest of Honor) Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2009. In 2019, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) or Commission on Filipino Language proclaimed him as “Kampeon ng Wika” (Language Champion) in the fields of Literature and Translation. He received the Rev. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ, Memorial Teacher Award for the Humanities from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2016. He is concurrently the Chair of the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) or Writers’ Union of the Philippines and of the National Committee on Language and Translation (NCLT) of the Sub-commission on Cultural Dissemination of the NCCA.

He has two volumes of poetry, three storybooks for children, and a number of critical essays published in national and international journals such as Malay Indonesian Studies, Philippine Studies, Bulawan Journal of Philippine Culture and the Arts, Daluyan, and Unitas. Together with premier poets Teo T. Antonio and Victor Emmanuel D. Nadera Jr., he has performed the Balagtasan, traditional poetic joust in significant occasions in the Philippines and in cities abroad like Singapore, Honolulu, Hawaii, San Francisco, California, and New York City.
