How to Color Index in Adobe Photoshop / Watercolor Print PART 4 Reduce Colors

In this video, I’ll be showing you how to color index in Adobe Photoshop. Color index is a method that we use in order to reduce the colors of print patterns in Photoshop. We’ll be taking a watercolor floral Photoshop repeat pattern that has tons of colors in it, and reducing it to only 8 colors, while keeping it as close to the original as possible.

Learning how to color index in Adobe Photoshop is really important for designers to learn because it’s very common for designers to be given color limitations on their prints. The amount of colors used within a print affects the cost of the printing job. Therefore, designers will often be told that their prints can only be a certain amount of colors depending on the project. So it’s very important that designers learn how to reduce print colors in order to meet the print requirements.

When we color index our prints, Adobe Photoshop will reduce the print colors to the amount of colors that you want and it’ll create a stippling effect that simulates the color gradations within the print. I’ll be showing you the best way to set your indexed color amount and then how to take the next step of working with the color table to further reduce your colors and make the necessary adjustments to get to your target color amount!
