Protest in Manipur's Kangpokpi turns violent; several including SP injured

Tensions flared in Kangpokpi district of Manipur after a protest turned violent on January 3 evening. A group of protesters demanding the withdrawal of security forces deployed at Uyokching, an area in Kangpokpi district bordering Imphal West, marched towards the office of the Superintendent of Police of Kangpokpi.

The situation escalated after protesters angered over the continued deployment of central forces particularly the BSF and the CRPF in the village, stormed the office of the SP and allegedly pelted stones. Security forces stationed inside the office premises resorted to firing blanks and tear gas shells leaving several injured. Kangpokpi SP Manoj Prabhakar also sustained injuries in his head.

The unrest occurred amid an ongoing indefinite economic blockade and a 24-hour total shutdown by Kuki-Zo groups in protest against the deployment of central security forces in Saibol, a neighboring village of Uyokching. The situation was later brought under control and the areas are being closely monitored.
