An immigrant rises to the top of the criminal underworld in the United States.
After many years (in 2013 David Yates seemed ready to direct the film, the year after there was Pablo Larrain and last year Antoine Fuqua) it seems that finally Universal Pictures is ready to deliver the announced Scarface remake.
The study announced yesterday that the Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen rewrote the film (the screenplay was from David Ayer's hands to those of Paul Attanasio, followed by Jonathan Herman and Terence Winter) and that now only has to find film director. According to Hollywood Reporter, two names would emerge as frontrunners: David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and Peter Berg (Lone Survivor). There is also the possibility that the film is directed by the same Coen, who was already the author of the remake of Il Grinta.
The studio announced that the film will be released on August 10, 2018, which means shooting will begin soon.
Scarface first went to the movies in 1932, the film was directed by Howard Hawks and told the rise to the power of an Irish immigrant who became a gangster in Chicago in the 1920s. In 1983 the film was reworked by Brian De Palma on a screenplay by Oliver Stone, with Al Pacino as protagonist: in that case the protagonist was a Cuban refugee who became a gangster in Miami in the 1980s. The new film will be produced by Marc Shmuger through its Global Production in collaboration with Martin Bregman, formerly Scarface Producer of Brian De Palma.
