Guy Gaudreau Joins Flyers Training Camp as Guest Coach

In a heartfelt gesture, the Philadelphia Flyers welcomed Guy Gaudreau, father of the late Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, as a guest coach during their training camp in Voorhees, New Jersey.

Flyers head coach John Tortorella extended the invitation.

The Gaudreau brothers tragically lost their lives in an accident on August 29 when they were struck by a car while riding bicycles near their home in Salem County, about 30 miles southwest of the Flyers' practice facility. Their deaths have deeply resonated within the hockey community.

During Monday's training session, Guy Gaudreau, who has a rich history of coaching hockey at both Hollydell Ice Arena and Gloucester Catholic High School, brought his expertise and presence to the ice. According to Coach Tortorella, having Guy participate in the practice was not only about honoring his sons but also about integrating him into the Flyers' fold as a valuable contributor. Tortorella appreciated Gaudreau's keen eye and lively engagement during the session, noting, "He's giving me [grief] about how hard the players are skating. It shows he's really watching closely."

The Flyers' players and staff welcomed Gaudreau warmly, sharing conversations and handshakes with him on the ice. Defenseman Travis Sanheim remarked, "Having him out here was really special. It’s a way for us to support him through everything. He’s done so much for this community, and it's great to give back to him."

While Gaudreau declined the invitation to travel with the team for an upcoming preseason game in Montreal, citing the need for more time, Tortorella is hopeful that he will return to the camp. The plan is for Gaudreau to contribute by running some drills, providing a therapeutic experience for him and an enriching one for the team. Tortorella also attended the funeral for the Gaudreau brothers and expressed a desire to further support the family during this difficult time.

The Flyers community continues to rally around the Gaudreau family, emphasizing the strength and compassion that sports can foster in the face of adversity.
