Join me for another cutting session in the Great Basin as I slice open 7 hand-collected rocks from the Dead Camel Mountains of Northern Nevada. What looks like plain desert stone on the outside often hides vibrant interiors—carnelian, wonderstone, jasper, chalcedony, and spiderweb-patterned rhyolite. These cuts highlight the wild geologic history of the region, where lava, ash, silica, and iron all fought for space beneath the surface.

Rock 1 – Chalcedony Nodule with Porcelain Core

Starting things off with this unassuming nodule—on the outside, it’s got a dusty rind and a muted gray top, nothing flashy. But once cut open, we get this beautiful two-tone contrast. The outer layer is translucent gray chalcedony, and right in the center is this dense, porcelain-white core. It’s a great example of multi-stage silica deposition—possibly forming around a void or fossil that got sealed in and replaced.

Rock 2 – Carnelian Agate

From the outside, it just looks like a polished chunk of jasper, but once sliced open it reveals gorgeous carnelian—deep red, slightly translucent, and full of warm glow under the right light.

Rock 3 – Candy Wonderstone

Here’s one for the flow pattern lovers—this is candy wonderstone. Look at those swirled reds and pale creamy zones. These patterns formed in rhyolitic ash as it flowed and compacted, later replaced by silica and stained by iron oxides.

Rock 4 – Flow-Banded Silicified Rhyolite

Now this one had me guessing—at first glance, I thought it might be petrified wood. The linear banding is really well defined. But looking closer, I’m leaning toward flow-banded rhyolite. The texture and zoning feel more volcanic than organic

Rock 5 – Fortification Agatre with Limonite Matrix

The outside has some yellow iron staining and faint hints of translucence. But inside—check this out—layered chalcedony with white, lavender, and tan bands, topped by this gnarly limonite-laced matrix.

Rock 6 – Spiderweb Jasper / Fractured Rhyolite

Thin, iron-stained lines crisscross the creamy interior—likely tectonic stress fractures that got outlined by iron oxides.

Rock 7 – Banded Red Jasper

Glossy red jasper with deep, earthy tones and subtle banding throughout. You can even see a few tiny vesicles, possibly old gas bubbles.
