The pipe was in bad shape, so he had to schedule another visit to the property. Two to three weeks later, he brings an excavator to dig and renew the water supply pipe. But before that, he had to locate first all the other services like the water supply, electricity supply and gas in order to commence excavating.

At the side of the property where the ATCO gas supply is, with his trustee shovel he manually digs and was able to expose the old galv connected to a fairly new PVC pipe. However, upon uncovering them he was able to notice a distinct smell of gas. Richard, not only a plumber is also an experience gas fitter tested the rusted galvanized pipe by using a soapy water to see if there is a leak. It is very handy to know how to do this, make a mixture of dishwashing detergent with regular tap water and put them in any spray bottle. After making the mixture, spray it on to the pipe, then wait and observed if any part of the pipe will show bubbles. If you see them then that would be a sign that the there is a pipe leak. Now that he was able to confirm the gas leak, before continuing his work he will call Atco gas’ helpline and have a technician to come onsite for an emergency work. The rusty galv pipe needs to be replaced within the hour for everyone’s safety.

Having no background on the work that was done on the gas pipes, we were left wondering why PVC pipe was replaced with new ones, but the galvanized section was just left behind. It was a patch up work when they could have just replaced the pipes all the way to the main line, to avoid this kind of trouble. Always report gas leaks as soon as you suspect one to a gasfitter or the supplier.
